I love the idea of Locale and it was one of the first apps I installed lo those many months ago when I got my G1. But it was also one of the first apps I uninstalled, because of numerous issues I experienced with it. I noticed it recently came out of beta and is selling for $10. I'm tempted to try it again, as it'd be well worth that money if the rough edges have been polished off.

So, to those who use it (especially if you're on a G1), do you experience any of the following with Locale:

  • battery drain
  • resource hogginess (i.e. slows down the whole system)
  • poor location functionality (need to create huge location bubbles, even then it doesn't always work, sometimes retriggers randomly after being in the same location for a period of time, etc.)

Thanks!

I had the exact same experience. Crashes and general slowdown all the time. – Isaac Waller Jan 18 at 19:51

Works great. Better and faster than the beta. The only thing is that my wifi connection breakes from time to time and stuck on "ending wifi"... Needs a reboot then.

I have been using it for a while, and paid for the new version. I think it does use wifi now (though it seems to hide how it is making it's decisions), which is great for me, as the two locations I care about are defined by wifi (due to layout, it doesn't reach much out of the area I want it to work in).

I believe you can get your money refunded within 24 hours, so you could give it a try.

You do want to register your wifi locations as it suggests for better accuracy, it seems to have helped mine.

I couldn't tell you about battery drain and speed, as I've always used it.

Thanks. Pretty sure it was not using wifi when I tried it. – Chuck Feb 15 at 16:25

It works great for me. But I am using the SuperD ROM which I think is one of the fastest ROM's. The location method still isn't that good. My phone does not slow down and nor does it drain my battery but I have an extended life battery. I don't use location as a setting. The only thing that changs for my profiles are volume and brightness. I am using the beta version right before it went to a paid app. That's my expierence.

Thanks, good to know. I suspect that the location issues are more hardware than software, so no amount of tweaking the app will help them. But I'd still be interested to hear from someone who does use location criteria. – Chuck Jan 19 at 16:39
