in one of the changelogs for cm update(cant remember which version) i read that he removed the IM app, but when i run a task manager app(cleanoid) it shows IM still running in the background. how come its still there?

It's one of those "core" apps that other parts of the OS rely on for the actual IM, as well as other things not necessarily directly related to messaging. If you kill its task - it will restart itself. If you delete IM.apk from /system/app directory - your phone will become unstable and other services will crash.

What Cyanogen actually removed was T-Mobile branded IM client, which is not IM.apk.
