I have a G1, this is my first time having a rooted phone when a OTA update is going to be released. If I have a ROM that has 2.1 already on it will the OTA update skip me or will it ask me to update anyway? And if I do update will I lose my root privileges? Thanks guys.

If you have rooted your G1, you will not receive the OTA update.

This is by design; if ota updates were not blocked, you'd lose root access when the update was applied.

If you decide you want the ota update enough to give up root access, you can use this tutorial to un-root your phone. (NB: tutorial is for G1 only.)
