I got the htc_ime keyboard installed, but when trying to switch to / activate it, I keep getting a 'force close' error and I can't type at all. What can I do?

Which OS version are you running, and on which device? There are a few versions of HTC_IME.apk flying around, each tailored (read: hacked) to work on a particular Android version.

The link Slinky posted is to the version that works on Donut (Android 1.6). If you are running Eclair (2.0, 2.01, 2.1) you would need a different version that can be found here along with installation and usage instructions.

The reason for needing to hack the original HTC_IME is because it was developed by HTC for use on their handsets that ship with SenseUI only. Without the rest of that framework, none of the apps would work on stock Android OS versions. And since neither HTC framework, nor SenseUI are open-source, community devs have to resort to reverse-engineering the .apk itself in order to get it working on non-HTC versions of Android.

Well try this keyboard:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=567294, I have had the problem before until I downloaded this donut version. Hope it fixes the problem.
