Sometimes, apropo of nothing, music will start playing on my phone. This happens even if the music played is forcibly ended. I have to scrabble at it to get it to stop as it's usually choking and not responding to the volume switcher.

I tried uninstalling Music.apk and started using MixZing Lite but the exact same problem.

It also happens with the official OS if you've got the HTC handsfree cable attached. The button on the volume/mic bit of the cable also pauses/starts the music player as well as answering/ending calls.

I've had it where I've been listening to streaming radio on my Magic via an app, knocked the button on the hands-free cable, and then takes me a few minutes to work out why the radio seems to be playing one of my favourite songs at the same time as something else! This has happened even when I've done a switch off and battery pull since the last time I used the in-built music app.

Are you using a CyanogenMod beta? That's a bug in the second-to-latest version, I think.

It's been a known bug in CyanogenMod ROMs going back a few versions, actually. I find that for me it's usually caused when I listen to music via the USB headset, stop the track and remove the headset. The music will start playing on its own shortly after. Cyanogen has been trying to fix this bug for a little while now. Hopefully he will succeed soon. – Chahk Oct 23 at 13:48
