Similar to the 'best app' question, I'm looking for the most popular application request. What's the one amazing app that just hasn't been written yet?

Following the comment on the 'best app' question, and the format of this related 'best' super user question, one app per answer. This makes it easy to see the most popular requests, not the most popular group/list of requests/apps.

I can't link more than one thing, so if someone wants to link to the 'best app' question, feel free. – Tim Lytle Nov 23 at 19:41
I'm actually very interested in this, as I'm a android developer looking for ideas. Good idea! – Jwsonic Nov 23 at 19:59

Best needed app: replacement for Market. That horrid interface needs to be scrapped and done from scratch. Better searching and sorting, filters, blacklists, etc.

Are you looking for a Market replacement that still likes the same app 'pool' (the android market)? – Tim Lytle Nov 23 at 21:26
Exactly. The Android Market needs a make-over. The app is too bare-bones, and the web browsing is not even there. – Chahk Nov 23 at 22:10

I can't wait to see filters, or at least sorting, on ratings – Stevoni Dec 1 at 20:02

I've been playing with AppBrain.com lately and it has a lot of features I like-- web interface, more filtering options (e.g. you can look at new apps in a category without having to also look at newly updated apps), allows you to create a GDGT-like public page of your apps, and if you have their app installed, can push installs directly to your phone. – Chuck Feb 14 at 17:31

How about an app that will let you edit app permissions after installation. I really don't like apps monitoring calls, tracking me,and I can't figure out the purpose especially for games.

I think most monitor calls so that the app will pause what it's doing before going to phone app. Otherwise, turn on WiFi and GPS and the tracking should go away. – Stevoni Dec 1 at 20:04
@Stevoni - apps can already do that by detecting if they're out of focus, so the call tracking is for something else.... – Isaac Waller Feb 14 at 17:22

A really good, polished music player. My dream would be one that reproduces the UX of the old Rio Karma.

I agree. I still use my ipod touch, even though I also have all the music on my phone, just because I can't stand the stock music player, or any of the others I've tried for that matter. – judge doom Nov 28 at 2:32

A podcast player with configurable playback speed so that one could listen faster than real-time.

Of course auto download is also a must and I want to use the headset button to pause and continue playback.

I'm currently using MyPOD it does a fine job downloading but doesn't yet have the other features.

I am looking for an app like the "Autotext" feature on my BB, where I can type a few characters and it will insert an entire word, phrase or sentence. It works across applications, so I can use it in SMS, Email, creating contacts etc. I use it all the time! It is a great time saver. Some examples that I use are: "lmc" inserts "Let me check on it and I'll get back to you" or "thk" inserts "Thanks!" or "itc" returns "I'll take care of it" We all have certain things that we say over and over again on a daily basis and this feature can save an awful lot of typing.

On Android this can only be done if it's added at the OS level or the keyboard level (meaning you would need to install a keyboard that supported described functionality). – Mike Bannister Nov 25 at 18:32

As Mike said, currently a developer could add this functionality in a keyboard, so petition your favorite 3rd-party keyboard developer to add this functionality! – Isaac Waller Feb 14 at 17:21
The HTC keyboard has pretty good auto-suggest for words. For long phrases, you could check out Inserty - it doesn't work quite like this but does enable you to insert custom lengths of text by switching the input device (also includes the option of auto-updating variable fields, like current location) – FoleyIsGood May 31 at 15:19

A planetarium/sky map application providing features in additiona to augmented reality (like Celeste SE) or dynamic display of the sky the device is pointing to (e.g. Google Sky Map). I mean a traditional planetarium application, such as Stellarium for desktop PCs, that can display the sky at an arbitrary location/time, change time and direction, show meridian/equator/ecliptic and other astronomical references/circles, Moon and planetary discs, positions of planetary moons, etc.

My most needed app: a simple text 411 interface that integrates with maps and contacts. Places Directory by Google is close, but Beyond411 for the Blackberry was quite excellent and simple.

But that link says that the app already exists for Android, so what are you after? – GAThrawn Nov 25 at 21:59

I want a "List" App with all the features that my Palm SplashShopper had.

  • Create Multiple Lists (Separated)
  • App Home Page with each List
  • Ability to filter each list by 1. store, 2. category, 3. For, &/or 4. Priority
  • Same ability to control how & what is all displayed
  • Prefer Desktop Sync; Can live w/ internet like RTM
  • Totals the costs of items on lists (If a price applies)
  • Add or customize "fields", Icons, even tax rate
  • Quantity
  • Show if I have a Coupon
  • Show if there is a note attached but not necessarily show the note's contents automatically (e.g.; On Astrid I can set it up to show "Notes" but it shows the entire notes content in my list. There is no way for me to see if an item has a note attached without seeing the entire note's contents unlike on Splash Shopper)
  • Absolutely must have the Reoccurring feature (e.g.; Shopping List check/uncheck as need items)
  • Needs to Backup to if not run off of the SD card

I am sure I am forgetting a few other features off the top of my head, but it has been months since my Treo died. I have tried multiple applications. A couple have many of the above features especially with work-arounds but nothing has come close to having it all. So far I've been using a combination of Note Everything & Astrid - but to me they are more replacements for the Memo's & Tasks on my Palm not the Splash Shopper App.

In a perfect world I would also like to be able to import all my lists from my Splash Shopper ;o)

This and an eReader that syncs with my desktop are the 2 biggest issues that still have me feeling forlorn over my Treo.

Worth petitioning SplashData directly, they've already released a few of their other apps for Android. I use the Android SplashID already, and that has features like desktop sync via WiFi built-in, so they already know how to do a lot of this. In fact there are already threads on their forum asking for this forum.splashdata.com/… – GAThrawn May 28 at 9:47
Did you try Astrid (syncs with RememberTheMilk) ? – Yoav May 31 at 10:44

Words With Friends or some other scrabble knockoff with social features. The dev who does this well for Android could make a lot of money.

An Audible app. Supposedly in the works. Edit: I hear it's in beta testing now.
